1996 Mazda Protege
The standard ABS became optional for 1996. The Protege LS model is equipped by
a 1.8-liter dual-overhead-cam 4-cylinder engine with a capacity to produce 122
horsepower and 117 pound-feet of torque. Other models use the smaller 1.5 liter
with 92 horsepower. All models can use either the five-speed manual transmission
or the four-speed automatic transmission.
Three distinct models carried basic features of past models, the DX, LX and ES
sedans. Protection in case of car crash and accidents is provided by safety devices
including rear defroster, halogen headlights, side-impact door beams, child safety
locks and driver and passenger-side air bags. Optional for all are floor mats
and automatic transmission. Accessories that can be added are car covers, rear
mounted bicycle rack, rear spoiler, front and rear mud guards and compact disc
player.
